What should I do in a Dental Emergency?

Don’t Panic - follow the steps below if you have lost a tooth:

(1) Pick up the tooth by the crown (the chewing surface) NOT the root.
(2) If dirty, gently rinse the tooth with milk, saliva or if you must water (last preference)
(3) Reposition the tooth in the socket immediately, if possible.
(4) Keep the tooth moist at all times
(5) Make an Urgent Appointment ASAP by calling 9300 0808

Types of Dental Emergencies

Lost Dental Filling

A common dental emergency is when fillings and restorations become chipped or broken. Several things can contribute to this, sometimes it’s just general wear and tear over many years. Other times it may be a result of grinding or clenching your teeth together, this often happens at night and is often a result of various stresses in life. Putting a great deal of pressure on the teeth and restorations.

When this happens making sure you get a replacement as soon as possible to prevent further damage and deterioration of the tooth. Left untreated, a lost or chipped filling can lead to further problems and even  possible tooth loss. To help keep your fillings in the best possible condition, routine dental care appointments are essential.

During these appointments, we can identify any concerns and as always prevention is better than cure! Another reason why it’s essential to keep up with regular and routine visits.

At Crown Holistic Dental we take a proactive approach to dental concerns. When replacing Fillings (restorations) we use BPA free composite material supplied by VOCO, leaders in their field and very much in line with our holistic philosophy.

This is a great all-ceramic based material used to restore the natural teeth. It is fabricated with material that does not incorporate classic resin monomers, which contain BPA, and eliminates the risks associated with silver amalgam fillings.

Broken or Missing Crowns & Veneers

Veneers and Crowns are a wonderful tool to improve your smile and enhance your ability to eat food. Usually, veneers and Crowns are built to last for a long time.

Occasionally they may fall out or get damaged, it is essential that these are replaced as a matter of urgency because the underlying tooth is not as strong as it once was when it was a completely natural surface. The most common reason you may experience a problem with a crown or veneer is their age.  

Most should last for at least 10 years and often times patients find they last for many more. However sometimes with age, the changes to the jaw and surrounding structures over time they may fall off, chip, or become damaged in some way. Another common reason is when the teeth that support the veneer or crown become decayed it may effect the supporting tooth structure.

There are many reasons for tooth decay and early intervention is always recommended. Another common reason is if you have the habit of grinding your teeth during sleep, or bruxing, for either physical or psychological reasons. If this occurs regularly, the force on crowns and veneers is significant. Particularly in regards to veneers that may not be able to withstand the constant pressure on the inside edge, leading to damaged.

Wisdom Tooth Emergency

Have you put off having your wisdom teeth extracted? Have you been noticing your other teeth starting to move in a way and position they were not before? Are they showing signs of infection or now causing you significant pain?

Dental Implant Issues

Have you had implants fail? Are you experiencing problems with your implants? Chances of you having problems with an Implant are very low, only 1 in 20 patients experience dental implant failure. Even though chances are low it can happen. Patients can significantly minimize the risk of a failed implant. It's important to be seen as a matter of priority if you feel there may be an underlying issue with your Implant.

The probability of an implant failure depends on several risk factors.

(1) Not following correct After Care
(2) Smoking
(3) Tooth Grinding
(4) Poor Oral Hygiene
(5) Some Medical Conditions
(6) Some Medications

If your  Implant has failed it will need to be removed.

If there has been significant bone loss then a bone graft may be necessary. Removing an implant is like a tooth extraction. In many cases a new implant can be placed after a period of healing.

However in other cases you may need to consider alternative options, such as a Denture or Bridges if they are suitable.

Regardless of the outcome, again as with most Dental Emergencies time is of the essence and the earlier you can be treated by one of our experienced team the better.

We understand how frustrating broken dentures and partial dental plates can be and that is why we provide an express priority service to all of our Patients.

You can relax in comfort, help yourself to our coffee and refreshments bar and relax in a cosy waiting area in a nice armchair whilst we repair your denture all whilst you wait.
