What are Tooth Fillings?
Essentially a Composite Restoration (Dental Filling) is a procedure used to fill a hole, or cavity, in teeth.
This may be necessary if you have any tooth decay or if the structure of the tooth is lost due to excessive wear or past traumas. These problems may be very Obvious as a result of pain and infection, however sometimes there may not be as apparent until further examination often detected at your monthly Oral Health Assessment and Check Up.
Do I need a Tooth Filling?
The following are a number of reasons that may require a restoration:
(1) Tenderness or even minor pain when eating
(2) Sensitivity to sweet foods
(3) Sensitivity to cold or heat
(4) Tooth has broken or chipped
(5) Excessive clenching or grinding of teeth
(6) Trauma resulting in injuries to the teeth (sporting accidents etc)
(7) Mercury amalgam fillings – as amalgam ages it expands and may crack teeth
(8) Patients no longer happy with visible “Silver Colour” in their mouth due to Amalgams.
What Types of Fillings are Available?
There are a number of treatment options including bonded filling materials (composite resins). The various Options are discussed further below.
Amalgam Free Clinic
At Crown Holistic Dental our Practitioners use tooth-coloured composite resin fillings, instead of amalgams.
Although the dental community is divided over whether traditional amalgam fillings that contain mercury are dangerous to overall health, we take every precaution to practice safe dentistry and of course, we err on the side of caution.
In fact, we have never placed any amalgam fillings at our practice and we are proud to be an Amalgam Free Clinic.
The ADA & FDA warns pregnant women and people with mercury sensitivity to avoid amalgam dental fillings.
BPA & Fluoride FREE
At Crown HD we also offer BPA- and fluoride-free filling materials to reduce the risk for health complications. Did you know that many of the available composites on the market today contain fluoride.
Because some patients may be sensitive to fluoride especially those with longstanding illness or chemical sensitivities we offer an alternative solution. In most cases patients will already be aware of these sensitivities and are greatly put at ease and reassured knowing that we accommodate their particular needs.
Tooth-coloured composite resin fillings are made from a durable, tooth-coloured material, they require only a minimal amount of preparation.
Which means we can preserve more of your natural tooth. Should you already have fillings that contain BPA the good news is that, under normal circumstances, your body is able to excrete BPA pretty well.
What is a short-term filling?
If there is not time to finish treating a tooth, we may suggest a short-term temporary filling. This will be replaced by a permanent filling later.
Temporary fillings can save and protect teeth! This is often performed on a tooth with an uncertain prognosis or as an intermediate measure before further treatment. Particularly for emergency patients we like to treat pain immediately and provide a degree of relief as quickly as we can also ensuring we give the tooth the best possible chance of successful long-term restoration.
Ultimately even though a few different ongoing treatments may be required, in most cases our dentists can remove decay and provide a temporary filling that same visit. Providing much needed relief and protection from further damage. Allowing the tooth to be stabiliesd and desensitised, allowing you to go about your normal activities until a more definitive plan can be made. Often it may be too early to determine the status of the tooth's nerves or how badly the gums are effected, so a temporary filling acts as a good initial solution.
The most common material used in temporary fillings is a tooth-coloured compound called glass ionomer. (See below for more information).
Temporary Fillings may last quite some time however you should always plan for a permanent solution in the future and make your next booking with one of our lovely front office team members.
Do you offer Gold and Porcelain Fillings?
Also known as Inlay and Onlays - Gold and porcelain are long-lasting fillings. Porcelain fillings can be matched to the colour of the other teeth, but gold is gold. Both these fillings are more expensive than composite fillings. These are made right Here on Site at Crowns State of the Art Dental laboratory.
These offer the convenience of same day treatment and are a viable, strong alternative to composite and glass ionomer Restorations. Inlays and Onlays are very similar to crowns, but are used for teeth that still have some healthy tooth structure and don’t require a full crown. An inlay fits inside the cusps, or bumps, of a tooth.
An onlay is larger and covers one or more tooth cusps. These porcelain fillings are extremely durable, match existing tooth colour, and protect teeth for years to come. In extreme cases of decay and wear or breaking down of the tooth structure then a Crown may be the only solution.
